Join us in Cape Canaveral, Florida for a symposium exploring preservation of Space Race resources!  The NPS National Center for Preservation Technology and Training (NCPTT) is partnering with the USAF Space and Missile Museum Foundation  to host the three-day symposium, which will bring together professionals with a stake in preserving what the space race left behind, including conservators, curators, cultural resource managers, scientists, engineers, and collection owners.  The symposium will feature talks and posters held at the Radisson Resort at the Port in Cape Canaveral, and a site visit to the USAF Space and Missile Museum Foundation  at Cape Canaveral.

The symposium includes two days of lectures organized into themed sessions. Keynote speakers will have 45-minute presentations with 15 minutes for questions. Session speakers will be allotted 25 minutes with an additional 5 minutes for questions. During the first two days, a poster session will highlight new, upcoming, and student research about preservation of these resources. The Symposium’s third day will include a tour of the USAF Space and Missile Museum Foundation at Cape Canaveral.

Beginning in the 1950s, the United States and the former Soviet Union wished to prove their superiority in technology, military firepower and political economic systems through a race into space. National media heavily covered the space race that captivated the attention of the American public, as well as the different developments of the Soviet and U.S. space programs. The conclusion of the space race was marked by the “handshake in space” when three U.S. astronauts aboard an Apollo flight docked in orbit with a Soviet-made Soyuz vehicle in 1975. The symposium will focus on this period.

The call for presentations is available at https://www.ncptt.nps.gov/blog/call-for-presentations-and-posters-space-race-symposium/. All attendees will receive a copy of the symposium proceedings. It will take approximately 12 months for the proceedings to be published and shipped.
