State Representative Ann Bollin, chair of the House Appropriations Committee, has announced that the Michigan House has approved a significant budget for K-12 education. The $21.9 billion budget is designed to shift decision-making power from Lansing to local schools and families.
"This budget represents a major shift in how we approach education in Michigan," stated Bollin, R-Brighton Township. "We’re building a stronger model by putting trust where it belongs — in the hands of local school boards, parents, and educators who know their communities best."
The new plan increases the state's per-student foundation allowance to $12,000, marking the highest level in Michigan's history. This rise translates to an additional $2,392 per student, with funds intended to enhance classroom opportunities.
Moving away from centralized mandates, the budget allows schools more freedom in using their funds. Local districts can now prioritize spending on areas they deem most critical for their students' needs.
"We’re done with top-down mandates that ignore the real challenges our schools face," said Bollin. "This plan meets schools where they are and gives them the flexibility they need to lift kids up and help them succeed."
The budget includes over $300 million for competitive grants aimed at reducing class sizes and improving early reading success and infrastructure. It also reinstates funding for school safety and mental health services cut last year.
"Every child deserves a safe, welcoming place to learn," Bollin remarked. "We’re making that happen by restoring the support schools rely on."
Bollin emphasized that this K-12 budget surpasses both current levels and those proposed by other governmental bodies. "It’s a step forward for Michigan families," she concluded.
