State Rep. Ann Bollin | Michigan House Republicans
State Representative Ann Bollin, who chairs the House Appropriations Committee, has voiced her opposition to Governor Whitmer's proposed tax increase aimed at funding road repairs. Bollin criticized the governor's plan as unnecessary and misleading.
In a statement released today, Rep. Bollin argued against the governor's claim that Michigan lacks sufficient revenue for road maintenance. She pointed out that "just last month, the House introduced a responsible, $3.1 billion plan that prioritizes road repairs using existing revenue, without raising taxes."
Bollin expressed concern over the financial impact of Whitmer's proposal on Michigan families. She stated that "instead of working with us, Gov. Whitmer is pushing a plan that would raise taxes and fees on Michigan families by $2.5 billion," which she noted would expand the state's budget from $83.5 billion to $86 billion.
Highlighting fiscal growth since 2018, Bollin remarked that "state government spending has ballooned by nearly $30 billion — a more than 40% increase." Despite this rise in spending, she claimed none of it was allocated for additional local road funding.
"The problem isn’t revenue; it’s priorities," Bollin asserted. "The money is there. We don’t need higher taxes to fix our roads. We need leadership that respects taxpayers, spends responsibly, and makes roads a priority."
