State Rep. Robert Bezotte | Michigan House Republicans
State Representative Bezotte has announced that bipartisan veterans mental health bills have successfully moved out of committee, bringing them closer to approval. The next step for these bills is a vote on the House floor, which Bezotte anticipates will occur soon.
Bezotte emphasized the personal significance of these bills, stating, "I know first-hand how combat changes a person." He highlighted the progress made in understanding issues like PTSD since the Vietnam era but acknowledged ongoing challenges for veterans seeking help.
The proposed legislation includes a self-assessment tool for veterans to evaluate their mental health privately and anonymously. "It’s optional – no one is forcing you to do it – and it’s anonymous," Bezotte explained. This initiative aims to encourage veterans to acknowledge potential issues and access resources without stigma.
Reflecting on his own experiences post-Vietnam, Bezotte noted the importance of privacy in addressing mental health concerns among veterans from his era. He expressed optimism about passing the entire package of bills designed to enhance support networks and resources for veterans.
Bezotte also recognized Livingston County's efforts in supporting its approximately 12,000 veterans through dedicated funding programs. He expressed gratitude towards residents who contribute taxes for veteran support.
In other news, state offices in Michigan will be closed on Wednesday, June 19th, in observance of Juneteenth. This marks the second year Michigan celebrates Juneteenth as an official state holiday, commemorating the day when slaves were informed of their freedom after the Civil War.
