State Representative Ann Bollin has emphasized the importance of public participation in the upcoming discussions concerning the new state law regarding wind and solar projects. The law, which removes local control over large-scale renewable energy projects, has raised concerns among residents. Bollin, who voted against the legislation, expressed her worries about the potential impact on communities.
"I have spoken with many people in our community who are very concerned about the loss of local control," said Rep. Bollin. "They don’t want massive wind and solar farms popping up in their neighborhood after state officials rubber-stamp it without any regard for local input."
The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) is now seeking public feedback through "engagement sessions" to determine the implementation details of the new law. The first two sessions are scheduled for Thursday, March 7, and Tuesday, March 19, from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. These virtual meetings will be held via Microsoft Teams, with information on how to join available on the MPSC website.
Topics of discussion during the sessions will include various aspects of the new law, such as application filing guidelines, fees, consultation processes, and the development of renewable energy ordinances. Rep. Bollin highlighted the significance of these hearings as a crucial opportunity for the public to have a say in policies that will significantly impact communities in the future.
