City of Rockford issued the following announcement on Feb 18.
Special March Primary Election
On March 1, 2022, the City will hold a Primary Election to fill the vacancy in the 74th State House District. Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. For more information about this election and voting, please see the Michigan Secretary of State website.
If you have requested an absentee ballot and have not returned it yet, you might want to soon. All ballots for the March election must be received by 8pm on March 1 to be counted. If you plan to mail it to us, we recommend you mail it to us this week to guarantee it arrives in time - postage is 1 stamp. You can also return your ballot in person at City Hall or use our drop box outside the front door.
If you have not requested an absentee ballot and would like one, there is still time, just fill out an absentee ballot application or stop into City Hall for one.
D.A.R.E. Drug Abuse Resistance Education Program
The Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program envisions a world in which students are empowered to respect others and choose to lead lives free from violence, substance use, and other dangerous behaviors. The successful Rockford D.A.R.E. program is taught to all fifth and seventh graders in Rockford Public Schools by Rockford PSO Ian Graham. PSO Graham’s goal with the program is to teach lessons on subjects that include bullying, internet safety, communication skills, stress management, over-the-counter prescription drug and opiates abuse, and more, while providing a positive interaction between students and police officers.
D.A.R.E. was founded nationally in 1983 and was proven so successful that it has been implemented in thousands of schools throughout the United States. In 2000, after State budget cuts, in conjunction with the Rockford Public Schools, the City of Rockford took over the program and has been teaching it ever since. At the end of this school year, approximately 17,400 Rockford students will have graduated from the D.A.R.E. program. Of course, this comes at a cost and currently, the program is funded by Rockford Public Schools, the City of Rockford, and Cannon, Courtland, and Plainfield Townships. Throughout each year, the Rockford Public Safety Department also fundraises. Unfortunately, the program will have a shortfall due to budget cuts from various townships. If you are interested in donating to the Rockford D.A.R.E. program, please contact PSO Graham at the Rockford Department of Public Safety at 616-866-9557. We thank you for any help you can provide.
