As the COVID-19 vaccine begins to roll out across the state, the number of total individuals vaccinated has now exceeded the number of confirmed positive cases in Michigan.
As of Jan. 20, a total of 598,127 Michiganders had received a vaccine for the coronavirus, according to coverage by Michigan Capitol Confidential. As of Jan. 25, the total number of state residents who have ever tested positive for the virus stands at 551,080, according to Michigan.gov.
However, the numbers who have tested positive may not reveal the total impact of the virus, according to Michigan Capitol Confidential. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have estimated that, from February through December of 2020, approximately 4.6 times more people had the virus than what is revealed by positive test results.
Those who had the virus but never got tested most likely had less-severe symptoms of the infection and never sought medical attention, thereby skewing the case numbers.
