State Senator Jim Runestad from White Lake, Michigan, has expressed his approval of a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision in the case of Mahmoud v. Taylor. The ruling allows parents to opt their children out of reading sexualized literature in public schools.
Runestad released a statement saying, “I am incredibly grateful that the U.S. Supreme Court had the courage to take up this essential issue, and even more thankful that they ruled in favor of the Maryland parents who brought this case forward.”
He emphasized concerns that have been raised by parents nationwide regarding age-appropriate content related to gender and sexuality being introduced without notice or consent. “This decision confirms that it is parents, and not the far left, who should decide what’s appropriate for their children,” Runestad stated.
Runestad sees this ruling as a restoration of parental rights which he believes have been undermined by certain groups. He also linked the decision to broader educational issues in Michigan, noting, “With Michigan’s reading and math scores continuing to slide toward the bottom nationally, this ruling is a stark reminder that our focus should be on the ABCs and not DEI.”
He concluded by calling it “a major victory for parents everywhere” in what he described as “a battle for our children’s future.”
