Ten Republican state senators have called on Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer to seek the immediate resignation or removal of Michigan State Police Director Col. James Grady and Deputy Director Lt. Col. Aimee Brimacombe. The request was made in a letter sent Thursday, citing ongoing controversies within the agency.

“Each day these two remain in charge is another day that failed accountability and a serious lack of integrity erodes public trust in one of our state’s most respected institutions,” said Senate Committee on Civil Rights, Judiciary, and Public Safety Minority Vice Chair Jim Runestad, R-White Lake. “It has become obvious they lack any sense of personal responsibility to step down voluntarily. It’s time for the governor to act.”

The Michigan State Police has faced internal challenges, including reports of questionable promotions and significant staff departures. In 2023, allegations surfaced regarding exam-rigging within the department. The following year, Director Grady faced criticism over his response to a fatal police chase. Deputy Director Brimacombe has also been cited for disciplinary issues, including what was described as an “insubordinate” record and misuse of her state vehicle.

Recently, legal actions have been taken against the agency. Earlier this month, a retired inspector and chief diversity officer filed a lawsuit alleging workplace harassment, favoritism, and retaliation by Grady and others at the agency. Additionally, two sergeants sued the department with claims that rigged promotions persist at the Flint post.

In June 2025, more than 98% of troopers reportedly voted no confidence in both Grady and Brimacombe’s leadership direction. Despite calls from various state leaders for their resignation or dismissal at that time, Governor Whitmer has not acted on those demands.

“Gov. Whitmer must listen to Michigan’s troopers and put an end to the appalling tenure of these failed leaders who have harmed our state police force under her watch,” said Senate Republican Leader Aric Nesbitt, R-Porter Township. “The brave men and women of our state police deserve to have a governor who has their backs.”

Other senators signing the letter include Thomas Albert (R-Lowell), Joe Bellino (R-Monroe), Kevin Daley (R-Lum), Roger Hauck (R-Mt. Pleasant), Michele Hoitenga (R-Manton), Rick Outman (R-Six Lakes), Lana Theis (R-Brighton), and Roger Victory (R-Hudsonville).
