“You could describe the superintendent as the CEO of the school district. That means I'm responsible for everything that happens. I have to make certain our budget is appropriate so that we can educate children with high-quality staffing. I’m responsible for maintaining compliance with federal and state law, making certain we're doing that and working with our board to ensure that our policies are correct and that we are governing the school district appropriately.
And then obviously, instruction and student learning and making sure the students are being instructed at a high level, that they’re learning and that our programming across the district is appropriate. From there, it's about progression—making certain that we have a vision for our school district, how it evolves going forward—and that we're providing an education that's keeping up with the times.
This is my fifth year as superintendent. I followed the normal career ladder—going backward, that would be: assistant superintendent, high school principal, middle school principal, assistant principal, teacher …I taught four-and-a-half years in the classroom. I was both a teacher and a coach. Through my experience, I knew I could have an impact on more students as an administrator, how I could help more teachers help more kids.
Growing up here in Saginaw, several individuals really had an impact on my development—my elementary basketball coach, high school basketball coach and teachers along the way. Then, in college, I was really undecided about a major. I was an athlete and we did a lot of community service stuff, which included some volunteer work in schools. After that, I was hooked. I went into education and haven’t looked back since.”
