The Brighton Area Schools honored Brighton High School cross country, golf and swim teams at a recent board meeting.

Girls swim and diving coach Jason Black was on hand to honor six of the 29 members of the team who qualified for the state meet. The team finished sixth overall in the state, the 12th time in the last 15 years Brighton has been in the top 10. The team was outstanding in the classroom as well, with state competition swimmers compiling an average GPA of 3.93.

“Thank you for all your support in everything that we do, especially with all the athletics,’ Black said.

Girls cross-country coach Kristi Matuszewski noted there were 52 girls on the team this year, a big number. Brighton won all of its dual meets this season, were division and conference champs and the fifth overall in the Michigan state championship meet.

Chris Elsey, the boys' cross-country coach, also honored his athletes. He said his student-athletes were always determined to do better, and finished second in regionals and conferences, and third in the state meet.

Finally, girls' golf coach Paul Parsell said the 2022 squad was one of the best teams he’s ever worked with. They only lost to two teams all season and were runner-up at the conference tournament. Brighton won regionals and finished second in the state with one of the golfers taking player of the year for the county.
