You Guessed It, Another Scam Alert

O

You Guessed It, Another Scam Alert

We’re officially sick of scammers, but they are out there at it again, folks. We’ve received multiple reports that citizens have unknowingly given access of their computer to scammers through emails that claim you’ve made a purchase of some software that you actually haven’t.

Here’s what happening…

People are getting an email thanking them for a purchase of software like Norton Antivirus, Windows Defenders, or Quickbooks for hundreds of dollars. Most of the time a phone number or a link is provided for you to dispute the charge, but when you click the link or call (they’ll tell you to click the link or send you a new link,) you actually open software that allows the scammer access to your PC. If you’ve saved your banking or shopping information in your browsers, now the scammers can do some damage and steal from you.

So never, and we mean really NEVER EVER click the link or call the provided number for an email that seems “off.” If you want to make sure you haven’t accidentally purchased whatever it is the email is telling you that you bought, open a new search on your browser, search for the company of the thing you might have bought (but probably didn’t,) and then use THAT phone number to call them.

Unfortunately, these scammers aren’t going to give up any time soon, so we’ve got to get better at spotting their game.
