Northwest’s Staff Lounge Gets a Makeover

Northwest Elementary School staff came back from Christmas break to a surprise in their staff lounge. The lounge had been re-decorated with new paint, plants, wood tables, and light fixtures. Principal Craig Munro and Counselor Kim Martin came up with the idea to show appreciation for the staff.
“It is calm, and it’s uncluttered. Everything in a school is generally crazy, so we wanted that to be a place that was kind of subtle. We went with grey [paint] and then just did some alternative lighting that didn’t feel so school-like and industrial,” Ms. Martin said.
The goal of the revamped lounge was to provide relaxation and boost morale among teachers, and it immediately got a positive response.
“[The teachers] have been super excited. The first day it was like a bustling coffee shop. It was so full; everybody took their lunches in there, and you could just see people collaborating and connecting. To see the staff coming together like that was cool,” Ms. Martin said.
