FLINT & GENESEE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE: Music to my Ears

Zz

Flint & Genesee Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement.

Music to my Ears

To provide enrichment activities, staff at Durant-Tuuri-Mott Elementary challenged students to music trivia games. Various games included a music version of “Jeopardy” and guess-the-song and finish-the-lyrics games. Not only did students learn more about the art of music, they also worked on language skills and the ability to recall information.

Person, Place or Thing

At Pierce Elementary, staff helped students build their English language arts skills by teaching them how to write poems. The students were challenged to create poems and then directed to add more to their pieces using adjectives, verbs and nouns. Not only were students able to express their creativity, the activity also helped reinforce the concept of parts of speech.

All in the Family

To help support YouthQuest families, Doyle Ryder Elementary hosted a virtual family night. Staff put together bags with goodies and delivered them to families’ homes before the event. Then, during the virtual meeting, staff played games with students and their families and gave parents a platform to ask any questions or express and concerns they may have. The event allowed staff to connect with families and also show their appreciation for parents and guardians.

Comic Relief

At Freeman Elementary, Learning Guide Mr. Jolly took students through the steps of creating their own comic books. The program had previously sent home blank comic books, which students were able to fill in during program. Students not only learned how to follow steps to create the book, they were also given the opportunity to use their creativity to create their own story. At the end of the lesson, everyone shared their finished pieces.

YouthQuest is made possible through the generous support of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and 21st Century Community Learning Centers.
