House Appropriations Chair Rep. Ann Bollin, R-Brighton Township, said on May 15 that Michigan’s economy remains strong following the latest Consensus Revenue Estimating Conference.
Bollin said the data presented at the conference shows that federal tariffs have not caused a major economic impact in Michigan and that the state’s economy is more insulated from international instability than it was in previous decades. “Michigan’s economy remains strong, and the data presented proves that our state has not seen a major economic impact from federal tariffs. The economists also noted that today’s economy is better insulated from international instability than it was decades ago. These are encouraging signs,” Bollin said.
She highlighted efforts to invest taxpayer dollars in priorities for Michigan families and called for continued fiscal responsibility during budget negotiations. “The work we have done to make sure taxpayer dollars are invested in the priorities of Michigan families is producing results. As budget negotiations continue, we must stay the course with a responsible approach that focuses on long-term priorities instead of growing government for the sake of growing government,” she said.
Bollin addressed recent tax relief measures, stating: “We knew that returning more money to workers, seniors, and families through the tax relief we negotiated last year — including no taxes on tips, overtime, and Social Security income — would scale back state revenue collections. That was part of the plan from the very beginning.” She added that changes directing gas tax revenues toward infrastructure were expected to reduce projected sales tax collections but were intended to prioritize core responsibilities over what she described as wasteful spending.
Bollin also pointed out demographic challenges facing Michigan such as declining school-aged population and workforce participation affected by lower birthrates and an aging population: “If we want long-term economic strength, Michigan must do more to attract job creators, families and workers to our state and create an environment where people want to build their future here.” She concluded by reaffirming her focus on a fiscally responsible budget centered around literacy, public safety, infrastructure improvements, healthcare for vulnerable residents—and ongoing efforts against waste or abuse of taxpayer funds.
