The Michigan House, led by Appropriations Chair Ann Bollin, has approved budget bills aimed at finalizing the previous fiscal year’s budget and eliminating concerns about a potential government shutdown. This move is intended to pave the way for discussions on the 2025-26 state budget.

Bollin emphasized the importance of this step, stating, “We are closing the books on the last budget and opening the books for the next in a productive way.” She criticized speculation about a possible budget impasse leading to a government shutdown as unnecessary and unhelpful. “We took a responsible, commonsense step to keep the focus where it should be — on crafting a balanced, thoughtful budget that meets the needs of Michigan residents,” Bollin said.

The approved House Bills 4161 and 4162 provide continued funding for essential services such as prison operations, public safety, court systems, veterans’ homes, and local government functions. The bills also ensure record per-pupil foundation funding for schools while maintaining full support for special education, school safety and mental health initiatives, and all debt obligations.

“This step allows us to move forward preparing the 2026 budget with confidence,” Bollin added. She expressed optimism that collaborative efforts between the House, Senate, and governor would result in a comprehensive budget plan in the coming months.

The legislative bodies will continue their work on developing a complete budget strategy moving forward.
