The facility offered 125 available beds—19 more than the county’s average at that time—and served an average of 97.1 residents throughout the quarter.

The CMS assigned Medilodge of Livingston an overall score of 3 out of 5, which falls slightly below Michigan’s nursing home average rating of 3.2.

Medilodge of Howell led the county in size during the period, providing 206 beds, while Wellbridge of Pinckney was third with 100 beds available.

U.S. Census Bureau estimates show the older adult population in the United States is increasing, while younger age groups are declining. Between 2020 and 2024, the population aged 65 and older grew by 13%, compared to a 1.7% decrease for those under 18. The country’s older adult demographic has expanded sharply since 1920, when there were 4.9 million adults age 65 and over, to more than 61 million in 2024.

A 2021 analysis estimates that about half of adults 65 and older, or roughly 28 million people, will need long-term services and support. The study also anticipates more than a third could eventually require nursing home care.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education group. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
